L ONG Barn is a hugely appealing arts and crafts, seven-bedroom detached house that comes with a one bedroom, self-contained annexe, ample garaging and swimming pool, in nearly one acre of grounds.

The property was designed and built in the 1920s by prominent architect Edgar Ranger who was influenced by well known architects of the day, such as MH Baillie-Scott and Sir Edwyn Lutyens.

In 1911, and working from his private practice in Gerrards Cross, Ranger designed his own house, Old Basing, but following service in the war, he moved to Broadstairs in 1919.

It was at this time that he designed about 40 houses in the Thanet area and became well known in the arts and crafts movement.

He was subsequently elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The accommodation is spacious and particularly well arranged, offering adaptable accommodation over two floors. Features include original parquet flooring, a variety of original leaded light windows, feature fireplaces, picture rails, ceiling roses and moulded cornices.

While the property retains much of its original character, the present owners have updated the property, including the fitting of a kitchen/breakfast room with white gloss units and granite work surfaces, pelmet and plinth lighting, a porcelain tiled floor and a range of modern appliances including a range-style oven with a five-burner gas hob and extractor over.

There are four reception areas in the main house, together with a conservatory and a games room with space for a full-size snooker table.

On the first floor, there is a principal bedroom suite with an en suite bathroom and dressing room, together with five additional bedrooms and a wet room.

Reached from an interconnecting door from the games room or externally, there is a staircase leading to an open plan bed/sitting room with a kitchen and a door to a bathroom, making an excellent self-contained suite.

Overall, the property has been well maintained by the current owners and provides excellent family accommodation.

The property is approached off the road by electrically operated double gates that lead to a generous parking and turning area, double garage and double car port.

The remainder of the garden is landscaped and mature. It is mainly lawned with shrubs, bushes, evergreens, pathways and mature trees and hedges.

There is also a heated swimming pool and a summerhouse.

Long Barn, Callis Court Road, Broadstairs, is for sale at £995,000. For more details, call Chesterton Humberts on 01227 452780.
