A POOL player from Broadstairs has completed the best year of his career by finishing eighth in the country in his sport.
Glenn Cooney, 39, from Osborne Road, competes in the Great Britain 9-Ball Pool Tour, which includes current World Champion Darren Appleton and former champs Daryl Peach, Karl Boyes and Chris Melling.
Cooney, who works in London as a commodities researcher, said he was delighted to finish eighth in a tour that includes many professional players.
He said: "I don't want to blow my own trumpet but I am very proud of my achievement.
"For an amateur like myself, it is great. When I first took up the sport I was probably a low grade professional but then I got married and had kids, so the sport had to take a back seat.
"Some of the other players train for six hours a day to prepare for competition, I probably train around six hours a month."
Cooney will be competing in the US Open in Las Vegas next July and wants to compete on the British tour again next season.
But he needs a sponsor to help him out as the past season he had to travel off his own back to events and it proved to be expensive.
Cooney added: "Anyone who is interested in the sport can get in touch with the paper about sponsoring me for the season.
"I really want to keep going and try to raise the profile of the sport in Thanet and across the South-East.
"Pool doesn't have the new-found razzmatazz of snooker but it is such a great sport and hobby too.
"Lots of people play 8-ball pool in the pubs with the red and yellow balls but I always had a passion for 9-ball pool."
